Iowa will be the first to pass a visitation bill. #SF306

Great news, the next step is the governor's signature. The amendment by the Iowa House was approved by the Iowa Senate today! Iowa will be the first state to offer a "Visitation Bill" for those alienated from their loved ones. ‪#‎FREEJimmy‬ ‪#‎bringhimhome‬

Misty –

Just wanted to let you know that SF306 passed the Senate unanimously, 48-0, so now it will be enrolled and go to the Governor for his signature.

Thank you for bringing your situation to our attention.

You are not the only one who has had problems with visitation of wards.

Thanks again.

Help #FREEJimmy by e-mailing the Iowa Senate and Iowa House in support of #SF306 (Senate File 306).

SSB 1162 passed unanimously and has been renumbered as SF 306. The next step is for the bill to be considered by the full senate which should happen around March 9th. Please help me by simply copying the e-mail addresses below and sending a simple and polite message stating that you support SF 306. Also, you can simple e-mail your districts representatives via the following link: Grassroots Action Center.

Kerri Kasem E-mail Response: “Visitation Bill” AB2034.

Dear Misty,

Thank you so much for sharing your story.  It is heartbreaking to hear about so many families who are going through similar situations.  The Kasem Cares Foundation is working diligently for change.

Please note that my team and I are working very hard to pass the “Visitation Bill” AB2034.  Assemblyman Mike Gatto is leading the charge in California.  Please write your assembly person and senators in your district and let them know how important this bill is because we will be coming to your state to get this bill started.

I continue to hold out hope that all families caught in situations such as mine will see change in the near future.  We at Kasem Cares will continue to fight for visitation rights for those who have been blocked from a loved one and against the injustice of elder abuse.

Thanks for your patience in waiting for my overdue response to your email.  Your story did not go unnoticed.  Please reply to this email and let us know if we can use your story to help our cause.  We would love to use your real name in your story, but we can keep anonymity by using initials and changing the names of the people mentioned.  Please specify which you would prefer in your response.  Thanks so much!

With love,
Kerri Kasem

SouthEast Iowa Case Management and Guardianship

Prior to our fathers death I had no concerns regarding my brothers care. However, shortly after a few red flags appeared and I instantly contact Jim's case worker and expressed my concerns. Trying to tell her all the details she didn't seem to caring and or interested in what I had to say.

Over the course of the last year and a half I've reached out to SE Iowa Case Management for advice and ways to bring Jim back into our families lives. Calls were never returned and e-mails were ignored.

SE Iowa Case Management is accredited by the Division of Mental Health and Disability Services to provide Case Management within the State of Iowa.

I'm appalled by this madness and I'm sure anyone reading this post that has followed the situation would be as well. If you do not agree with SE Iowa Case Management excluding myself and his adoptive mother feel free to voice your concern but do it in a polite way.

No visitation rights for friends or family of a ward in Guardianship!

"There are no visitation rights afforded to friends or family of a ward in a guardianship proceeding under Iowa Code Chapter 633. It is the duty of the guardian to provide the care, comfort and maintenance of the ward. Iowa Code Section 633.635. This Court believes that implied within this duty is the right of the guardian to, within reason, limit the contact the ward may have with others if it's in the ward's best interests to do so. At the same time, this right is not unlimited, and inappropriate limitations on contact between the ward and others may give rise to applications to specifically limit or delineate the powers of the guardian, pursuant to Iowa Code Section 633.63, 633.65 and 633.633."

"Notwithstanding this finding, the Court suggests that both Misty and Katherine find ways to improve their communication and to allow future reasonable contact between Misty and Jim, as will promote Jim's best interests."

Kerri Kasem is looking for stories on alienation.

Kerri Kasem is looking for stories on alienation.

Casey Kasem case spurs proposed family-law bill
"Visitation Bill" AB 2013
LOS ANGELES (KABC) "” Ailing radio legend Casey Kasem may inspire a new law based on his children's attempts to visit him. The legendary radio DJ has been suffering from Parkinson's disease for years. His family has been embroiled in a battle over the right to visit him, which has prompted a state lawmaker to take action.

It's been a frustrating court battle for Kasem's kids. But now one of his daughters says she has new hope. Kerri Kasem says she simply wants to see her father, but is being denied by her stepmother of 33 years, Jean."To be blocked for no reason when he needs us the most has been the hardest thing I have ever had to go through," said Kerri Kasem. Casey Kasem signed off the air in 2009 due to Parkinson's disease and is now hospitalized. Kasem's kids have protested outside his home to see him and recently battled in court. "There is nothing in the law books right now that allows a judge to adjudicate, to rule on visitation rights for children," said Kerri Kasem.

Now Kerri is joining Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles) in proposing new legislation."Current law does not provide for any information to be given to the adult children of somebody who might be sick and elderly. We want to change that," said Gatto. Gatto's bill would require conservators inform relatives if someone is hospitalized for acute care, or dies, and disclose funeral arrangements and burial location. Gatto says the bill also provides "reasonable accommodations" for adult children to visit their parent. "This is about keeping families together," said Gatto. "I think the most important thing, of course, is to make sure that children get to see their mom or dad if that person is getting toward the end of days." "It's the most important thing I've ever done in my life and I just hope this helps so many families that are going through this," said Kerri Kasem.

What does the bill meant to Kerri personally? "That there's hope, that there's light, and that my father would have stood up and done something about this, and he can't, so I'm doing it for him," said Kerri. Gatto hopes to pass this bill under what's called "urgent status." If so, that means it could become law by mid-summer.
